Game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragon is a brand-new HBO spinoff! It promises to include everything of the previous series’ rich lore in addition to an increased CGI dragon budget.
Based on the intriguing Fire & Blood novel by George R.R. Martin, House of the Dragon tells the tale of the Targaryen dynasty.
It’s a tragic tale with elements of a dragon fable and one of a family at war. It has the same setting, the same sources of inspiration, and a tone as Game of Thrones, but it also stands alone as a show with a distinct plot.
As with any good high fantasy story, your game of thrones prequel experience will most certainly benefit from some sci-fi research. Here’s all you need to know before watching to avoid frequent misunderstandings like “Why are all of these blonde folks so sad?” or “Wait, are they related?”

1. This was not the first Game of Thrones spinoff concept
Plans for a Game of Thrones sequel series began in 2018 with a show called Bloodmoon.
Bloodmoon was created by Jane Goldman (Kick-Ass and Kingsman: The Golden Circle), Naomi Watts and Jamie Campbell Bower (Stranger Things) were in the cast, and they even filmed a pilot.
However, George R.R Martin had minimal involvement in the production, which was set on a historical period only referenced in passing in his books, and after the pilot was completed, HBO decided not to make it into a series.
2. Prepare to Meet the Targaryens
Game of Thrones exposed spectators to multiple Westeros noble families, but House of the Dragon focuses on one of them: the Targaryen dynasty, ancestors of the formidable Daenerys.
3. The Budget
The budget for each episode of House of the Dragon is $20 million, for a total of $200 million for the entire prequel series. In comparison to Game of Thrones, which costs over $100 million every season, it is one of HBO’s most expensive series.
4. More Game of Thrones spin-off programs are on the way
It may not yet be on the scale of the Marvel Universe, but if you like Game of Thrones, there should be plenty of follow-up episodes in the next five years.
5. The Schedules
In addition to the fresh casts, the series has various timelines, with actors playing younger and older versions of the same characters. The teaser and trailer included both young and old Rhaenyra in various scenes.
6. The dragons featured in the series
In the Game of Thrones prequel series, there will be a total of 17 dragons.
7. The Iron Throne is undeniably present, having been erected by Aegon, the first Targaryen monarch. Many Games of Thrones characters wondered aloud about Aegon and his two sister-wives, Rhaenys and Visenya, who were the first generation of Targaryens to arrive in Westeros and (literally) set things beginning.
8. Adapted from a true story
Despite drawing inspiration from George RR Martin’s 2018 novel Fire & Blood, the series is based on a genuine incident from the English Civil War.
9. Births are the new marriages
Milly Alcock plays Rhaenyra Targaryen, while Emily Carey plays Alicent Hightower.
If marriages signaled to Game of Thrones fans that something momentous was on the way, babies have a similar effect in House of the Dragon.
10. The cast has a lot of work to do with the wigs and clothes
Because of the legendary Targaryen’s long white hair, many of the cast members had to wear wigs on production.
Matt Smith, a confessed fidgeter, remarked that if he were the ruler of Westeros, he would change one thing on the show.
“I’d let them color their hair.” “The wigs were a hassle,” he admitted at Comic-Con.
11. Heroes and villains aren’t always so obvious
Ser Criston Cole is played by Fabien Frankel.
House of the Dragon’s cast and creators believe their series is less certain of its heroes and villains than Game of Thrones.
12. The princess and prince battle with dragons, so spectators will be enthralled by the action on the screen.
13. Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen is a horse and dragon rider who aspires to be Westeros’ first governing Queen. Emma D’Arcy will play the princess, and Milly Alcock will play her as a child.
14. Paddy Considine will play Princess Rhaenyra’s father, King Viserys I Targaryen.
15. Princess Rhaenyra’s uncle is Daemon Targaryen. He is the king’s younger brother and heir apparent. Matt Smith, who played Prince Philip in the first season of The Crown, will play this character.
