    Skin Repigmentation In Vitiligo Patients Can Now Be Treated At Home

    The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recently authorized the first at-home treatment for skin repigmentation for vitiligo patients.

    Based on data from two identical Phase 3 clinical trials revealed that 30% of patients using the cream regained at least 50% of skin repigmentation on their body and roughly 20% of patients regained at least 50% of repigmentation on their face after 24 weeks, the FDA announced the approval of Incyte’s ruxolitinib cream on July 18.

    Background

    Before the approval of ruxolitinib, whose brand name is Opzelura, Jim Lee, vice president of Incyte’s head inflammation and autoimmune department, stated that the only treatment options available to people with vitiligo were light therapy carried out in a doctor’s office. They may now apply the cream at home.

    Disease or circumstance

    The most prevalent kind of vitiligo is nonsegmental vitiligo. Depigmentation, or loss of pigment, occurs in regions of the skin as a result of the disorder. Depigmentation may appear on the hands, arms, face, neck, scalp, and places that frequently come into contact with objects or are rubbed, such as the lips and genitals.

    It is thought that vitiligo is an autoimmune condition. The immune system seems to be attacking the skin’s pigment cells (melanocytes) in vitiligo patients. Numerous people who have vitiligo also have at least one additional autoimmune condition.

    Effectiveness

    Opzelura has been proven to be safe and effective in two clinical studies (NCT04052425 and NCT04057573). In both studies, nonsegmental vitiligo patients were randomized to receive Opzelura or a placebo twice daily for 24 weeks, with an additional 28 weeks of Opzelura therapy for all participants. Compared to 10% of placebo patients, 30% of Opzelura patients achieved at least a 75% improvement in the face Vitiligo Area Scoring Index after the 24-week treatment period.

    Information on Safety

    The most frequent side effects of Opzelura are acne, itching, and fever at the application site, as well as the common cold, headache, and urinary tract infection.

    Opzelura shouldn’t be used alongside therapeutic biologics, other JAK inhibitors, or strong immunosuppressants such as azathioprine or cyclosporine.

    Patients using JAK inhibitor therapy for inflammatory disorders are at an increased risk of serious infections, death, cancer, significant adverse cardiovascular events, and thrombosis.

    Moderna Starts Phase1 Clinical Trial of First-ever HIV Vaccine in Africa

    The nonprofit scientific research organization IAVI and Moderna Inc. is a biotechnology company that launches mRNA HIV vaccines. Recently, they announced that they start a Phase 1 clinical trial of mRNA HIV vaccine antigen mRNA-1644 at the Family Health Research center in Kigali, Rwanda, and The Aurum Institute in Tembisa, South Africa. According to the CDC, About 1.2 million people in the United States had HIV at the end of 2019. The World Health Organization says 37.7 million people in the world had HIV in 2020.

    The first vaccines were distributed Thursday at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences in Washington, DC. Phase I trials will be starting at the Hope Clinic of Emory Vaccine Center in Atlanta. Also the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, and the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio.

    The working method of the vaccine…

    The vaccine is designed to work with white blood cells to turn into antibodies that can neutralize HIV. A booster shot is also being studied to work with the HIV vaccine. The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) has managed to dodge the immune system for long decades. Scientists have made advancements in treatments, such as long-acting injectables for pre-and post-exposure prevention and treatment. HIV can develop into AIDS, which can be dangerous.  The immunogens antigens were developed by the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative and Scripps Research.

    They will be delivered using the same messenger RNA or mRNA technology in Moderna’s successful COVID-19 vaccine. On May 18, Moderna and the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative announced the first clinical trial in Africa for a candidate HIV vaccine.

    I think this is a revolutionary approach to HIV vaccine design and development, and I am hopeful that we are on the path to finally realize an HIV vaccine,” said Etienne Karita, MD, MSc, MSPH, the director of CFHR.

    Smartwatches are the second-most commonly used gadget after smartphones. The watch that is saving lives lately is Apple’s smartwatch. Internet is full of stories of people who are alive because of the watch which tends to make a curious angle, what is so special and unique that makes apple watch so liable compared to other smartwatch brands.

    It’s a Health-Gear

    Apple Watch is a high-tech gadget coupled with powerful apps. These apps encourage users to live a healthy lifestyle, the app runs in the background for basic regular checkups whether the user is active or inactive. It notifies early symptoms and alerts the user for a medical checkup. The app summarises the collected valuable data with date and time which helps the doctor to diagnose the disease.

    Apple watch has three sensors; optical heart sensor, an electrical heart sensor/electrode, and Next-generation accelerometer and a gyroscope sensor.

    Optical heart sensor uses Photoplethysmography (PPG) that checks up heartbeat per minute(BPM). An average BPM of an adult is 60 to 100, this sensor monitors bpm and alerts the user in case of high, low, or irregular heart rate.

    A 24-year-old man Adam Love from Australia was alerted by his Apple Watch that his heart rate during sleep was hitting 140 beats per minute (bpm). It was then when Love decided to visit a doctor and it turned out that he had a hole in his heart since birth that went undetected for 24 years. After a full medical examination, doctors found a serious lung condition in which his blood was found circulating in the right atrium instead of the left side. He went through surgery and recovered in 3 weeks.

    Electrical heart sensor/electrode is one of the three sensors that monitor electrocardiogram (ECG) electrical pulses generated from the user’s heart.

    The sensor can classify atrial fibrillation and sinus rhythm but is unable to identify other conditions, like heart attacks. 

    For an instance Ed Dentel, a 46-year-old resident of Richmond, Virginia as soon as he updated his watch with the ECG app the watch started annoying him with Afib notifications and alerts. His heart was beating between 120bpm to 140bpm. Later on, he decided to pay a visit, feeling embarrassed Dentel shared that his watch was giving alerts after updates. A technician hooked Dentel to an ECG machine. Normally, it takes time to observe the reports and say something. He called the doctor and the doctor said, “You’re in AFib and the watch may have just saved your life”.

    Next-generation accelerometer and a gyroscope sensor for fall detection. The apple watch detects a hard fall it starts vibrating with alarm sound and displays alerts. If the user is conscious he/she has two options to contact emergency services or to stop the alerts by tapping on ‘I’m OK’ or pressing the digital crown. If Apple Watch detects that the user is still moving, it waits for the user to respond to alerts and won’t call emergency so until and unless the user is immobile for a minute it calls automatically.

    After the call ends which means it is unanswered as the user is immobile, the watch sends a message to emergency contacts with the exact location.

    Toralv Østvang, a 67-year old living in Norway was saved because of this feature in the apple watch. He fell in the bathroom, local emergency service got the message along with the location. Later on, after 30 mins rescue team arrived to save Toralv. He was unconscious and covered with blood but alive. 

    The bottom line is do you still think it is not worth it to buy a smartwatch.

    NORD is a patient advocacy organization, working to help patients suffering from rare diseases and the originations that serve them. It’s dedicated to specifying rare diseases, treatment, and cure of rare diseases through programs including education, research, advocacy, and patient services. 

    Rare Disease Day is held on Monday, 28th February.

    Ways to Support the Program 

    The organization allows supporters to join a virtual 5k to help and support the patients suffering from Rare Diseases and help the organization spread awareness regarding the same. NORD is trying to bring equality for people suffering from Rare Diseases. The New Hope Run Club and Avery’s Hope are joining hands to sponsor the event. The event costs $35 to participate in and it takes place Sunday, Feb. 27.

    These events encourage the supporters to light up their rooms with Rare Disease colors as a motive to portray their support for the patients suffering. Urges to encourage people all over the globe to do the same for showcasing their support. 

    Fire departments, police departments, sheriff’s offices, troopers, and EMS teams can “Light Up for Rare” as well. The organization asks for supporters to post videos on social media using the Hashtags like #RareDiseaseDay @RareDiseases #LightUpForRare.

    The event encourages supporters to grab their favorite zebra print shirt or toss on a striped scarf and take part in NORD online for a community gathering marking the 12th annual Rare Disease Day! This one-hour event is supposedly packed with entertainment from a star-studded guest lineup and offers a place to connect and chat with other rare community members and allies.     World Cancer Day: NCCN joins “Close the Care Gap” by UICC

    On 4th February, this World Cancer Day, the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) unites with associations all across the world to attract attention to inequities in cancer care and work to handle them. “Close the care gap” is the new campaign conducted by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) that will promote equity in health care for different races/ethnicities, socioeconomic groups, sexual orientations, gender identities, regions, and more.

    According to Robert W. Carlson, MD, Chief Executive Officer, NCCN:

    The identity and address of a person should not determine the healthcare someone receives. Still, there are disparities in the health care received by the U.S. and other countries. There are differences in health care for different communities of people within the U.S. So this World Cancer Day, NCCN will discover and manage the important barriers that stop too many people from acquiring high-quality cancer care. 

    Previously on World Cancer Day global strategy for eliminating cervical cancer was announced by World Health Organization. According to UICC, the survival rate of women with cervical cancer is more for white women than for black women in the U.S. The mortality rate for cervical cancer is more than 90% in low and middle-income households. Only 20% of the children from low-income households survive from cancer while the survival rate in high-income households is 80%.

    There are significant differences between the cancer care received by different groups of people even in high-income countries like the U.S. So on World Cancer Day, NCCN and UICC tries to uncover and close the care gap received by different communities.

    Dr. Cary Adams, CEO of UICC, says: 

    Healthcare organizations should come together and break down barriers. Over the last 10 years, UICC has achieved a lot in cancer care and control around the world but not handling inequities in society is delaying their progress. Closing the care gap is about fairness, dignity, and fundamental rights to let everyone have better health and live a longer life.

    The NCCN Guidelines in Oncology is a resource that standardizes the best available quality in cancer care and stops improper or insufficient management. Many separate studies reveal that standardized care enhances results, but is not always used equally for all patient groups.
