Mia Le Roux

The Miss South Africa pageant has hit an exciting milestone! The 28-year-old Mia Le Roux made history as the first deaf woman crowned Miss South Africa, according to the BBC. But wait, there’s more! She has already collected numerous prestigious titles before this groundbreaking victory. And, as the newly crowned Miss South Africa, Mia Le Roux first says after winning, “I do hope to achieve a community or a culture where other young girls can feel included.” So, let’s dive into the inspiring journey of Mia Le Roux, the first deaf woman crowned Miss South Africa!

Miss South Africa, Mia Le Roux

The new Miss South Africa, originally from Sasolburg, Free State, and raised in Oudtshoorn, Western Cape, has an inspiring story! Diagnosed with profound hearing loss at just one year old, she received a cochlear implant to help her hear. Consequently, she spent years in speech therapy before finally speaking her first words.

But wait, there’s so much more to Mia Le Roux! Beyond beauty pageants, she attended Oudtshoorn High School and snagged a nutrition certificate from the Sport Science Institute of South Africa. She also holds an exercise specialist diploma from Eta. At the same time, she works as a marketing manager, models part-time, and studies marketing at the University of South Africa. Talk about being a beauty with brains!

However, her passion for beauty pageants shines brightly. Before making history as the first deaf woman crowned Miss South Africa, she won titles like Miss Struisie and Miss Garden Route. Moreover, she also landed in the top 5 of Miss Deaf South Africa. What an incredible journey!

Her Winning Speech

More than anything, Mia Le Roux, has wowed the world with her inspiring winning speech. She earned the crown amid controversy. In her acceptance speech, she emphasized breaking barriers and supporting those who feel excluded or differently abled. She hoped her victory would inspire the young men and women to achieve their “wildest dreams, like [she] did.”

Moreover, she is lighting up the world with her incredible story! From facing exclusion to celebrating her big win, she credits the Miss South Africa Organization for opening doors to inclusion. And now, she’s on a mission to connect these two worlds with a flair.

As Miss South Africa, Mia is ready to team up with the government, corporate South Africa, and everyone who wants to help. Her ambition is to support the financially excluded and differently-abled in reaching their wildest dreams, just like herself. With her dynamic vision and boundless energy, Mia is set to make a splash and inspire amazing change!

A Backlash?

The journey to Le Roux’s crown quickly turned into a dramatic saga, full of twists and turns with contestant Chidimma Adetshina at the center. Initially, the 23-year-old faced intense scrutiny over her Nigerian heritage and her mother’s identity, leading to a storm of controversy. Things took a wild turn when Gayton McKenzie, head of the Patriotic Alliance and South Africa’s minister of culture, publicly questioned her eligibility on social media. Consequently, McKenzie’s remarks sparked a heated debate about xenophobia and “Afrophobia.” Which is a type of discrimination targeting other Africans within South Africa.

Then, on August 6, the plot thickened even further. South Africa’s Home Affairs Minister, Leon Schreiber, announced an investigation into Adetshina’s citizenship. This probe, prompted by concerns from the Miss South Africa organization, hinted at potential fraud and identity theft related to her birth registration.

Amidst this whirlwind of controversy, Adetshina made the tough but courageous decision to withdraw from the competition on August 8, 2024. She shared her choice on Instagram, revealing it was made for her family’s safety. Adetshina concluded her announcement with heartfelt gratitude, appreciating the support from the Miss South Africa Organisation and cherishing the unforgettable experience she had.

An Inclusive Milestone

Amidst all the drama and cheers, Mia Le Roux has made history as the first deaf woman crowned Miss South Africa. And her victory is more than just a title; it’s a shining example of inclusivity and a powerful message that dreams can come true despite the challenges.

As Miss South Africa, Le Roux is excited to use her platform to advocate for inclusivity and support for the differently abled. She aims to bridge gaps and bring attention to issues faced by those with disabilities, proving that everyone deserves a chance to shine.

Le Roux’s win is a significant milestone, highlighting her journey from facing profound hearing loss as a young girl to becoming a symbol of hope. This achievement represents a step forward in embracing diversity and challenging societal perceptions of beauty and ability. Her success not only breaks barriers for individuals with disabilities but also sets a new standard for what beauty and strength look like in pageantry and beyond. Le Roux’s story inspires others and marks a new chapter in the history of the Miss South Africa pageant.
