  • Ellen Voie: Driving The Female Workforce With Positive Work Culture

Ellen Voie: Driving The Female Workforce With Positive Work Culture

You might associate success as something driven by personal ambition, but the goal is broader for others. Ellen Voie, CEO & Founder of the Women In Trucking Association, Inc., is more concerned about elevating the entire industry so everyone can benefit instead of advancing her professional path. While finding personal success, her organization is the driving force in creating a better environment for all women. Perhaps this is more of a woman’s way of leading an organization, but this is quickly becoming the best way to change the world.

    Women & Softer Economics

In 2007, Ellen founded Women In Trucking Association as a nonprofit trade/professional organization. She found that women comprised about three percent of the driver population and had very little representation in board rooms or the C-Suite. The sentiment at that time was that the industry was being gender-blind and claimed to hire the best candidates. However, it was apparent that there was not a level playing field. There was unconscious bias in the hiring and promotion of female executives, and for female commercial drivers, the playing field was anything but level. Showers were communal for men, restrooms for women were scarce, trucks were designed for men, and companies didn’t provide women’s uniforms.

The most critical area was the lack of data. Since women were considered “statistically insignificant” in trucking, breaking the information down by gender was difficult. Over the years, the Women In Trucking Association has worked with universities and private entities to look at the differences between men and women in transportation careers. Now, research has proven that women take fewer risks, both in the boardroom and in the cab of a truck. Women make decisions differently, and women have different values when looking for a career at a trucking company. Women are more collaborative and better at team building. All of these are positive attributes that weren’t valued in the past.

    Different But Inspiring

Unlike other girls, Ellen has been interested in less traditional activities, such as woodworking, auto mechanics, drafting, and welding. After graduating from high school, she found a position designing material handling equipment at a steel fabricating plant. She was soon offered a transfer to the traffic (shipping) department and later advanced to Traffic Manager. She earned a diploma in Traffic & Transportation Management which gave her a great deal of insight into how the supply chain works.

Later, after starting her family, Ellen took her skills in transportation and worked as a consultant to motor carriers in central Wisconsin. During that time, she earned her bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree in Communication. After eighteen years, she was ready to move on, and she accepted a position to lead the Trucker Buddy program, a nonprofit organization that matches professional drivers with elementary classrooms.

In 2006 Ellen was recruited by a large carrier in the Midwest as the Manager of Retention and Recruiting Programs. Her job was to initiate corporate-level programs to attract and retain nontraditional groups, including women. The goal was to increase the ranks of female drivers at the carrier and understand this demographic’s needs. At the time, Ellen was working on obtaining her private pilot’s license, and she belonged to a women’s aviation group. It occurred to her that there wasn’t a similar organization for women in the transportation industry, which prompted her to start the Women In Trucking Association.

    Reinventing Against Disparity

Although women make up 50% of the population, female business owners are still a minority, especially in transportation careers. Women entrepreneurs entering male-populated industries find additional challenges to bring their ideas to life. The Women In Trucking Association has over 6,000 members in ten countries, and about fifteen percent of them are men who join because they support the mission. The organization provides insight to its members through surveys, research, and partnering with other organizations to better understand gender diversity in transportation careers. The goal is to be a resource for the industry and the government.

As a trade/professional organization, Women In Trucking Association serves its members. For anyone involved in the transportation environment, the opportunity to network allows members to build better businesses. They believe in transparency and are responsive to feedback. When members feel the dues are worth the cost to provide value to their company or career advancement, they’ll be sure to renew their membership, so feedback is crucial. The organization constantly surveys its members on important issues so they can better represent them. Most importantly, they use their insight to make changes in the industry by quantifying their experiences, giving them measurable goals.

    Overcoming The Uncertainties

Despite such devotion, Ellen admits that she has difficulty responding to criticisms. She cannot help but often take these criticisms personally because the Women In Trucking Association is her creation. She faces a hard time when people try to attack them for something they dislike instead of discussing working together.

The world is at a stage where gender diversity is becoming an essential goal in every industry. The Women In Trucking Association is on a mission to make women aware of the career opportunities in the trucking industry. They have always had a virtual presence as an organization, so this wasn’t a factor amid the pandemic. The goal is to hire self-motivated people since employees do not have established work hours or even vacation schedules. Everyone works to complete their duties without the need for oversight.

Millions of business owners worldwide faced at least some level of challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Women In Trucking Association was also forced to make difficult decisions. For instance, they had to cancel their in-person event in 2020 and switch to a virtual conference. They had over 600 enthusiastic registered attendees, which encouraged them to provide a virtual option. Similarly, in 2021, they had over 800 at their in-person event in Dallas and hundreds more who participated in all or parts of the virtual conference.

    From Ellen’s Seat

Having a solid foundation, the Women In Trucking Association has future goals to create local and regional chapters for members to continue to network throughout the year. The first chapter will be meeting early in 2022. In addition, they have launched their new Driver Ambassador tractor-trailer, driven by a female driver. She will take the mobile display around the country to educate the public about the trucking industry through interactive exhibits and a simulator in the semi-trailer.

Ellen’s message for entrepreneurs is to be persistent and not let critics affect your ambition. “Starting any business, whether it’s nonprofit or for-profit, is difficult and time-consuming. Do your homework but ask lots of questions. Find a mentor and believe in yourself.”

How Startup Founder Hub will help Indian entrepreneurs?

With a $1.79 trillion market share, Microsoft’s Startup Founder Hub gives startups free access to the technology, tools, and resources they need to build and run their businesses. From the most reliable, secure, compatible, and open source compliant cloud platform, to the best development and productivity tools including GitHub Enterprise, Visual Studio Enterprise, and Microsoft 365. Startups nationwide will also benefit from opportunities for mentoring and training with industry experts and the “Microsoft Learn” initiative.

The company said,” the hub is available to all startups in India, including those without third-party validation or funding.”

Why is Microsoft focusing on India?

Turning away from the American Dream has proven to be a serendipitous decision for a number of tech entrepreneurs who land multimillion-dollar deals a few years after returning to India.

For a number of others, India proves to be a land of opportunities for those building businesses that meet the growing demand of a growing middle class. For those who want to stay the course, there’s enough money and mentorship to see them through, lure aside the market itself.

As new success stories emerge, the number of Indians eager to return continues to grow journey from an idea to a unicorn as part of Microsoft’s commitment to boost startup ambitions to drive innovation from India to the world. As India is the third-largest ecosystem for startups in the world, Startup Founder Hub offers huge opportunities for emerging businesses across all sectors.

Microsoft said it continues to demonstrate its ongoing commitment to the Indian startup ecosystem and founders through specially curated initiatives. Last year, Microsoft launched a startup growth and scaling program leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) called Microsoft AI Innovate. The program supports startups in India that harness AI technologies, helping them scale their operations, foster innovation, and develop industry expertise. • McMaster’s Ukrainian Students Are Sharing How Can We Help Ukraine

McMaster’s Ukrainian Students Are Sharing How Can We Help Ukraine

After the Russian aggression on Ukraine in February, all of McMaster’s Ukrainian students are filled with misery and the pain they feel is not just theirs, but also for the whole community that spans the globe. After being exposed to a multitude of disheartening messages and images from their devastated homeland, it is not surprising that these students find it difficult to focus on their academic assessments.

Aleksa Gobosz is a third-year Biology student and Larisa Hemon is a third-year Life Sciences student. In addition to participating in Ukrainian cultural activities for more than 10 years and representing Ukraine’s interests at the national level, the two Vice-Presidents of Fundraising of the McMaster Ukrainian Students Association are tirelessly committed to the cause.

“We actively participate in the Ukrainian church. People may think that because we are Ukrainians, we are bringing this issue to the forefront now. However, that is not true at all. We are deeply invested in our culture and always have been. It is integrated into every facet of our lives,” said Gobosz.

    What MUSA Decided?

With Easter approaching, MUSA (McMaster Ukrainian Students Association) has decided that a suitable way to raise money for Ukraine would be with Pysanky kits. They are selling kits that include a kistka wax, 5 dyes, and instructions. The earned money will be donated to the Ukrainian fund.

Additionally, recently donating approximately  $800,000 in funding for displaced students, finding mental health support through services such as the Student Wellness Center has been a hurdle in itself. McMaster does not have culturally sensitive crisis management plans in place that are equipped to deal with the mental health struggles that arise for students due to ever-evolving global circumstances.

    The Situation of Students

People think it’s an ordinary conflict thousand of kilometers away, not going to affect them. That is far from the truth as it is already affecting us day by day. Ukrainian students are further burdened with knowing that their family and friends are in constant shelling with no way out. Many Ukrainian students communicate round-the-clock with their loved ones, during and in between their day-to-day life. Unfortunately, the extent to which the war has drastically shifted the lives and priorities of Ukrainian students has been vastly underreported, leaving many Ukrainian students burnt out and emotionally exhausted.

Participate in the events and rallies

Emilia Pasternak, the fourth-year nursing student and MUSA co-president joined over 30,000 people in Toronto on the walkway in support of Ukraine. Moreover, she said that even though people might not see the immediate value of rallies or events, the experience reminded her that a show of support can make a huge impact on their minds. There have been more rallies and events across Canada and will continue. A good place to find out when the next one is through “SUSK”, the Ukrainian Canadian Student Union.

    Don’t blame the Russian people

All of the student leaders of MUSA stress that people across Europe are affected by the war, including the Russian people too.

Do not blame the Russian people as decisions made by the Russian government are not necessarily reflective of the beliefs of all Russian people,” says Hemon.

There are a lot of Ukrainians in Hamilton and McMaster and the only way to get over this is by working together. There are efforts to facilitate attune help for students fleeing Ukraine to support academic freedom.

  • Adidas Reveals The Qatar Worldcup 2022’s Ball ‘Al Rihla’ Ft. Messi

Adidas Reveals The Qatar Worldcup 2022’s Ball ‘Al Rihla’ Ft. Messi

This year’s grand sports tournament FIFA Worldcup will be held in Qatar. At the showpiece event, fans saw the official match ball on Wednesday 31 March, for the very first time and its design has certainly got a seal of approval.

The name is a bit confusing ‘Al Rihla’, at the key event Adidas unveiled the official match ball for the Qatar  2022 World Cup featuring Messi. Adidas said it was the fastest “in-flight” ball ever.

What’s New in this “Al Rihla”?

Designed by Adidas, who have produced the balls for the last 14 tournaments. The ball has a vibrant blue, red, and yellow color scheme that swoops across a pearlescent white background. First is its CRT-CORE,  providing speed, accuracy, and consistency for fast-paced action and precision, with maximum shape and air retention, as well as rebound precision.

Then there’s the SPEEDSHELL with a new 20-piece panel shape that improves precision, flight stability, and steering through macro and microtextures.

The sports organization FIFA announced this design is to support peak game speed, as it travels faster in flight than any ball in the history of the tournament. It provides the highest level of accuracy and reliability in the playfield.

The ball’s design is inspired by the nation’s architecture, iconic boats, and national flag.

“The ball is just the beginning. The rest of your football journey is yet to be written,” written on Al Rihla’s caption on adidas.com, where it is on sale for $165.

Argentina Captain Lionel Messi and South Korea captain Son Heung-min are pictured holding the ball in promotional material used in the online Adidas shop.

“The game is getting faster and, as it speeds up, accuracy and flight stability become critically important,” said Franziska Löffelmann, the Design Director – Football Graphics & Hardwear at Adidas.

Chromium-Based Browsers May Exploit With Dangerous Zero-Day Hack

Hacking attacks and exploits are a constant game of cat and mouse between developers and hackers. With over 3 billion users, Chrome/Chromium is the most targeted software in the world today. Google also confirmed that the number of Zero-day attacks is increasing.

    What is a Zero-day Attack?

With that in mind, Google issued a warning on its official blog, that Chrome on Windows, macOS, and Linux is vulnerable to a new ‘zero-day’ hack. Zero-day attack is a dangerous form of attack, which means hackers are aware of the vulnerability before Google can fix the problem. Chromium’s V8 program is responsible for running java scripts which means if the attackers found any vulnerability they could place any background software as they want.

“Google is aware that an exploit for CVE-2022-1096 exists in the wild, this means every chrome user is vulnerable” admitted Google.

    Is Microsoft Edge Remain Safe?

Microsoft Edge is a chromium-based browser and since the vulnerability issued on Chromium open-source software, Edge is running on warning too. Microsoft is also aware of that and rolled out a new emergency update on its Security Center. That confirms all Chromium-based browsers on the risk list such as Amazon Silk, Brave, Opera, Samsung Internet.

Google currently limits information about exploits so that users take the time to update and ask users to update chrome version 99.0.4844.84. At the time of publishing this report, all companies marked the threat as ”High”.

    High: CVE-2022-1096 Confusion in V8

Google has admitted there were 16 Zero-day attacks performed in 2021 alone and also revealed 12th and 13th caused so much damage. With the concern around the security exploitations, the US cybersecurity and infrastructure security agency ordered all federal agencies to patch immediately. All Chromium-based companies are following Google’s lead and rolling out emergency updates.

  • Namya Mahajan, A Nonprofit Entrepreneur Eased Preschool Learning to 800K Students

Namya Mahajan, A Nonprofit Entrepreneur Eased Preschool Learning to 800K Students

India is a growing country with a population of over 140 cr., the middle-class family child got peers before the first day of school due to a lack of preschools for mass. To solve this complex problem a nonprofit entrepreneur and founder Namya Mahajan came up with an Edtech solution, Rocket Learning. Namya’s Rocket Learning has already eased 800K child’s preschool learning issues in the past two years.

Namya Mahajan said“We’re focused on early childhood education, an area of the huge need in India. More than 70% of preschoolers in India receive no education at all before grade one. As you can imagine, the consequences are dire. Cognitive stimulation for 3 to 6-year-olds does so much more than prepare children for school.”

How does Rocket Learning bridge the learning gap?

After Mukesh Ambani’s jio hits, India has become online in almost every sector, now most people are aware and use a smartphone in their households. Rocket Learning is also aware of that scenario that’s why they use WhatsApp to meet parents and give them tasks. With the given task information any education level parent could work on with their child. After the task has been done Rocket Learning makes a report card according to the tasks and performance. With the report card in hand, parents feel more helpful and children are also used up with this method. Eventually, the issue of the preschool learning gap decreases.

Why does Namya Mahajan choose the non-profit model of business?

Rocket Learning was created with the belief that education is a fundamental right of every human being and with the Non-profit business model fulfilling that belief is easy. It would give space to giving solutions to needy parents. Since Rocket learning is tech-prioritized, scaling the solution is also very easy.

    About Namya Mahajan

After pursuing an MBA from the Harvard school of business, she used to be the managing director of the Self-Employed Women’s Cooperative Federation (SEWA). SEWA supports more than 100 women’s cooperatives in the informal economy. Before that, she worked at McKinsey and Company as a management consultant. Soon after graduation, she Co-founded Rocket Learning.

  • Is “Virtual RAM” a New Gimmick to Increase Smartphone Sales?

Is “Virtual RAM” a New Gimmick to Increase Smartphone Sales?

In recent years, the smartphone market has grown much faster where companies release new phones day after day with new marketing strategies and features. Some of the features are groundbreaking, some are making no sense and some literal gimmick means they work but not as the company shows.

    Truth to The Gimmick

In recent times, the term “V-RAM” or “Virtual RAM,” company uses as their main highlight depicting that they could increase significant performance boost in mobile gaming but in reality that’s not true!. V-RAM uses an SD card or internal memory space as RAM for better temporarily storing background apps data for launching fast and giving a fast experience for only browsing or app launching speed. But the company charges extra money and says V-RAM is a new technology, increasing your phone RAM gives extra benefit in gaming FPS but in reality, this technology is way old from the era of rooting and custom ROMs.

This virtual RAM technology has a bad effect on your smartphone also. It uses your phone’s state drive space and this drive has a limited read-write speed and lifespan. By using virtual ram excessively it can cause a decrease in the speed of read-write speed and lifespan.

    Is it Worthy?

Are we giving extra money for V-RAM? Is it worth it to pay extra money?

In my opinion, if you change your smartphone very often you don’t have to rely on virtual ram. But if you use your smartphones for more than 3 years go for a smartphone that has this feature but turn on the feature after using it for 2 years.

And also if you use a very old smartphone that doesn’t come with this feature you could manually turn it on or for better knowledge watch some youtube tutorials.
