Tips to Grow Tropical Fruits in Containers

“If you want to grow tropical fruits, I have good news,” said Byron Martin, co-owner of Logee’s Tropical Plants. “You can grow tropical fruits in containers in most climates.” All you need to do is follow three simple tips.

The first tip, according to Martin, is to choose the right plant varieties. Select dwarf varieties of plants that produce fruit on smaller plants. Varieties such as Changshou Kumquat and Super Dwarf Cavendish Banana are perfect for growing in pots or containers.

Tip number two: move potted tropical plants as the seasons change. “Put the plants outdoors in the summer,” said Martin. “Exposing a plant to the outdoors helps make it stronger and healthier.” Then, when colder weather approaches, move plants indoors near a sunny window. That way, the fruit trees and plants can still get enough light and be protected against cool temperatures.

The third tip: fertilize container-grown tropical plants. A premium tropical plant fertilizer will give tropical fruiting plants the nutrients they need for plant growth and fruit production.

Here are Byron Martin’s tips to grow tropical fruits plants in pots and containers.

    Banana ‘Super Dwarf Cavendish’

This wonderful variety of the Cavendish banana will produce edible fruit when the tree is only 3 feet tall. The bananas will often appear after just one year. Although the fruit is smaller than commercial bananas, these bananas are perfect for little hands and smaller appetites. Banana plants do best in full sun.

Keep your plant’s soil moist, keep the temperatures warm, and fertilize regularly for best growth and fruit production. Super Dwarf Cavendish plants are easy to grow, and they grow amazingly fast.

Your potted banana tree will grow to a height of about 3-4 feet tall. A plant in a four-inch pot sells for $24.95 from Logees.com.

    Exotic Kumquats

Kumquats are a wonderful fruit for home growing. The Changshou Kumquat (Fortunella obovata ‘Fukushu’) is rare and hard to find in local garden centers. But this variety, known for its large juicy fruit, is available online.

The fragrant white flowers of Changshou Kumquat bloom from May to September, and the fruit ripens year-round. Changshou’s pear-shaped fruit is larger than other kumquat varieties, and it usually has five or six segments of fruit inside the sweet, thin skin. Changshou Kumquat will reach a height of 3-5 feet tall, and it prefers full sun.

“I think it’s the best kumquat we’ve ever grown in the Logee’s greenhouses, and it makes a perfect potted specimen plant,” says Byron Martin.

    Coffee Arabica

Many people grow a coffee tree as a beautiful indoor foliage plant that scents a room with a sweet fragrance. A Coffee Arabica plant produces red, pulpy berries on an upright shrub. The berries alone are enough reason to grow this plant. But then there are the fragrant white blooms nestled among shiny green leaves.

Place a Coffee Arabica plant in a bright window, and soon you will be harvesting your own coffee beans. (The coffee beans grow inside the plant’s coffee cherries.) A Coffee Arabica plant loves humid growing conditions—50% humidity or higher. Your potted coffee tree will grow to a height of 3-5 feet tall in the sun or partial sun.

    Egyptian Yellow Guava

Most guava trees are native to Central America, South America and the Caribbean islands. But Egyptian Yellow Guava (Psidium guajava hybrid) is a very productive hybrid from Egypt that produces medium-sized fruit.

Egyptian Yellow Guava bears oblong, yellow fruit that are about 4 inches long. The white inner flesh is sweet and juicy, and it is ideal for eating fresh or preserving. The plant flowers in recurring cycles in spring and summer. It takes between 60 and 90 days for the flowers to turn into ripe fruit. This small tree grows 4-6 feet tall, and it makes a wonderful addition to any tropical fruiting plant collection. It grows best in full sun or partial sun.

    American Wonder Lemon

The American Wonder Lemon (also known as Ponderosa Lemon) is a variety made famous by Logee’s Plants. In the year 1900, a Ponderosa Lemon tree growing in a Logee’s greenhouse outgrew its pot and “planted itself” in the dirt floor of the greenhouse. Today, that plant is 122 years old—and it still produces lemons. The Ponderosa Lemon trees that Logee’s sells are tissue cuttings from that original tree.

The fun in growing a Ponderosa/American Wonder Lemon plant begins with a heavy surge of fragrant white flowers each spring. Then, small lemons begin to appear. American Wonder Lemons continue to grow to enormous proportions (often up to 5 pounds each) even though the plant remains an easily manageable size. An American Wonder Lemon plant in a 4-inch pot sells for $29.95.

Penn State Thon Breaks All-Time Fundraising Records Surpasses $200 Million

Penn State THON, the world’s enormous student-run philanthropy that delivers yearlong financial and emotional aid to families impacted by preadolescence cancer,  has raised an all-time annual delight of $13.75 Million at the culmination of the association’s 50th-anniversary 46-hour dance marathon. THON’s fundraising measures benefit its sole beneficiary Four Diamonds, a national nonprofit gift fund that covers cent percent of all medical expenses for families experiencing childhood cancer at Penn State Health Children’s Hospital and helps a robust cancer research program at Penn State College of Medicine.

In its 50th year, THON has expanded more than 200 million dollars to fund critical cancer research and provide extensive care and support for Four Diamonds families. The theme of THON 2022 was “Spark Endless Light” and saw the annual no sleeping or sitting dance marathon return in-person to the Bryce Jordan Center effectively. This year, there were over six hundred dancers who took a 46-hour rostrum in the fight against childhood cancer. Recording artists, Chelsea Cutler and Bea Miller headlined Friday and Saturday night performances, sponsored by PNC, and LA Rams Super Bowl Champion and Penn State alum Nick Scott also made jaw-dropping appearances during THON Weekend 2022.

Kate Colgan, Executive Director of THON 2022 shares, “Reflecting back over 50 years, we are so proud to see how far THON has come and how college students can impact change when we come together.

What started out as an event organized by 78 Penn State students has grown into over 16,500 student volunteers and $200 million total raised for families facing childhood cancer. As a result of volunteers and supporters, THON is now $13,756,374.50 closer to the day they dance in celebration of a cure.

THON was established by Penn State students in 1973, and over the years has grown into the globe’s immense and infamous student-run philanthropy. Founded by Charles and Irma Millard immediately after their son Christopher died of childhood cancer 50 years ago, Four Diamonds has partnered with THON since 1977. Together, THON and Four Diamonds have supported more than 4,800 families experiencing childhood cancer by covering 100 percent of all medical expenditures, provided vast and extensive specialty care services at no cost to Four Diamonds patients at Penn State Health Children’s Hospital, and provided funding to create a multifarious cancer research program through the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and Penn State College of Medicine.

Suzanne Graney, executive director of Four Diamonds said, “The Four Diamonds and THON community are united in our efforts “For The Kids” and we will not stop fighting until there’s a cure for pediatric cancer. These past few years have proven just how adaptive and resilient THON and Four Diamonds are. Through our desire to evolve the ways in which we fundraise, we have been able to deliver our highest total ever. We understand it takes a special kind of passion and spirit to achieve this level of success, and we are so grateful to THON for what they make possible for our families.”

Fostering sustainable finance students for greener economies in Asia

Started by NUS Business School in affiliation with the Sustainable and Green Finance Institute (SGFIN) at NUS Business School, the MSc SGF course is the first MSc course delivered among leading Asian institutes that concentrates on sustainable and green finance.

“Asia requires Asian finance students with the appropriate institutional experience to tackle environmental and sustainability challenges while hovering over the required financial evolution. We are thrilled that NUS is the first to start a proper Master’s in Sustainable and Green Finance in Singapore and Asia,” said Associate Professor, Zhang Weina, Academic Director of the MSc SGF program and Deputy Director of SGFIN.

    Need For Green Finance Experts

The International Labour Organisation (ILO) calculated that the green economy could begin with around 24 million employment around the world by 2030. According to a report from different companies in 2021, Southeast Asia independently needs about US$2 trillion investment in sustainable infrastructure to decrease greenhouse gas emissions. The area’s green economy would provide approximately five to six million new vacancies by 2030. Graduates from the one-year NUS MSc SGF course will be capable to grab these development possibilities to build a better world.

    Learning from the Best University

The course is appropriate for curious specialists who wish to contribute to the growing industry and economic sector in embarking on sustainability problems.

Students will be taught about sustainable finance theories and research and case studies on Asian organizations and economic markets. They will be prepared to recognize environmental and business challenges and offer attainable economic assistance and explanations for real-world enterprise issues, such as those connecting to regulatory reporting, managing environmental hazards, and sustainable investment.

At NUS Business School, learners will get taught by world-class professors and also witness thrilling sustainability inventions from the university and beyond. “We are dedicated to fostering a new generation of financial specialists, who go past the conventional method of maximizing yields, who support sustainable industries fetch more funding, and who will make Asia a greener zone to live in,” said Low Tuck Kwong Professor Sumit Agarwal, Managing Director of SGFIN.
The MSc SGF will commence classes in August 2022. The course seeks to accept around 35 to 40 students for the first batch. Application forms will be beginning on 22 February and will be ending on 30 April 2022.

  • Resettling Education in Post Pandemic World

Resettling Education in Post Pandemic World

    Internet and Education

The sudden shift from the physical classroom to online classrooms was a major shift in the history of Education. While COVID-19, a global pandemic hit countries all over the globe, education structure took a three-sixty-degree twirl. The very concept of online schools and colleges gave an awe-struck opportunity for students even to continue their education post-pandemic. The Internet, however, played a key role in helping the students to experience the mode of virtual classrooms. Online examinations were not the best method of conducting exams but they were the safest method to take the examination during that time. With all the waves that Covid-19 had hit the earth with, the lives of the youth and their career were to a certain extent, unharmed.

    Reinforcement of Education

Today, the stability initiated across the world with the enforcement of providing vaccines to the global population quite effectively built up the immunity to fight against the deadly virus. However, with the positive follow-up after almost two years, the students, the teachers, and the ministers are in favor of going back to the primitive method of education in post-pandemic. On 16 January 2022 the World Bank Education Minister, Jaime Saavedra said, “No justification now in keeping schools closed in view of Covid 19.”

Thus, with the initiative taken into account, the Undergrads and Post-Grads students are finally having their offline classes in many countries all over the globe. The schools are opting for the primitive mode of education with a minimum number of students. “The reopening of colleges and Schools is the first step of the UK’s lockdown easing”, said The UK Government.

    Education and Employment

With the introduction of the Internet and social media as the strongest medium, social media entrepreneurs are increasing in number. With the introduction of crash courses, various Edtech applications are expanding, concreting education in post-pandemic. The establishment and improvement in privatization is something to be taken into account. Youtubing, blogging, and many other opportunities are now known and available to students in different fields of study.

Education is however taking a twirl in ensuring students have enough knowledge with less burden and the process to reinforce these motives and ideas is still in process. The jobs over the internet and the existence of social media are improving the condition of unemployment. Thus, all the threats that CoronaVirus has made us dwell with led to a better version of education and opportunities.
