Musk, the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, was joined by Indonesian Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin. The event marked the official launch of Starlink in Indonesia.

The Launch Ceremony
Musk arrived on the Indonesian island of Bali by private jet. He participated in the launch ceremony held at a community health center in Denpasar, the provincial capital. Dressed in a traditional green batik shirt, He highlighted Starlink’s transformative potential for Indonesia’s remote regions. These regions span over 270 million people and three different time zones.
“I’m very excited to bring connectivity to places that have low connectivity,” He remarked. “If you have access to the internet, you can learn anything.”
Initial Deployments and Impact
The initial rollout of Starlink was implemented at three health centers. Two were in Bali and one on the remote island of Aru in Maluku. A video presentation at the event demonstrated the benefits of high-speed internet. It showed how real-time data input could address health challenges like stunting and malnutrition more effectively.
When asked about potential investments in Indonesia’s electric vehicle sector, Musk indicated his immediate focus was on Starlink. “We are focusing this event on Starlink and the benefits that connectivity brings to remote islands,” he said. He emphasized the life-saving importance of reliable internet access.
Indonesia has been keen to attract Tesla to establish manufacturing plants for electric vehicles. The country aims to leverage its abundant nickel resources. His visit has quite sparked renewed interest in such potential collaborations.
Government’s Commitment and Starlink’s Expansion
Communications Minister Budi Arie Setiadi also attended the launch. He stated that Starlink is now commercially available. However, the government will prioritize services for outer and underdeveloped regions. Before the launch, Starlink secured a permit to operate as an internet service provider for retail consumers. It also received authorization for network operations with a very small aperture terminal (VSAT) permit.
Regional and Global Presence
Starlink, which dominates the satellite internet market with around 60% of the 7,500 satellites in orbit, has expanded its reach in Southeast Asia. Besides Indonesia, Malaysia granted the company a license to provide internet services last year, and a Philippine-based firm signed a deal with SpaceX in 2022. Globally, it is also widely used in Ukraine, supporting the military, hospitals, businesses, and aid organizations.
Furthermore, he is scheduled to meet Indonesian President Joko Widodo on Monday and will address the World Water Forum in Bali, further underscoring the significance of his visit and the collaborative potential between Indonesia and SpaceX.
