Why Schools and Parents Should Be Concerned About the Mental Health of Students

Mental Health of Students

In the last few years, people have sort of grown out of that mentality and have started to
recognize the importance of Mental Health. Slowly but surely, parents, institutions, and
organizations are deeming mental health just as important as physical health. Therapy or mental
health awareness is something that is needed by all ages. Recently a lot of concerns were raised
for the mental health of students. The way it is worsening at a concerning rate. The way there has
been seen a spike in students taking harmful steps and decisions for themselves.

Students are a special set of individuals who are leaving behind the most important stage of their
lives, during which they go through numerous unpleasant experiences.  When their education
progresses to a higher degree, students are exposed to more stressful situations, such as difficult
coursework, demanding job assignments and projects, and living in dorms. These obstacles must
be successfully handled. It is the responsibility of educators to assist their pupils in coping with
such challenges so they can maintain healthy mental health.

Rising Numbers and Concerns
53% of university students in Australia reported experiencing psychological anguish, according
to research. In a sample of Turkish university students, depression (27.1%), anxiety (47.1%), and
stress (27%) were all shown to be present. In Canada, 30% of undergraduate students
demonstrated psychological problems, and in Malaysia, 41.9% of medical students reported
emotional disturbances. Ten Asian nations claimed to have higher rates of stress, anxiety, and
depression than other nations. According to research on medical students in India, depression,
anxiety, and stress affected 51.3%, 66.9%, and 53.3% of the students, respectively. Anxiety and
depression are very common among university students in Pakistan, according to an earlier study
on DAS.

Inducing students to prepare for examinations or finish projects on time might be helped by a
certain amount of tension and worry, but persistently high levels of anxiety and anxiety disorders
like generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and social anxiety disorder can
be crippling. In the US, anxiety disorders impact over 2.6 million children and adolescents and
are the most prevalent mental health problem. The mental health of students needs to be taken
care of, as some are not able to handle the pressure their academics and other aspects put on
them.

These are reasons why mental health awareness is necessary for people of ages, especially
students. If from a suitable age, they are instilled with the idea of therapy, mental health, and
taking care of themselves, it will be a golden step for future generations.

How to Ensure a Mentally Positive Environment?
The majority of a student’s time is spent in school and in the classroom. It’s a terrific location to
learn how to take care of their mental health because of this.
Students frequently learn about mental health and what it means to have a good mental state in
school for the first time. For kids, it’s far too simple to get caught up in life and forget to take
care of themselves. They might not understand what they require or how to seek assistance if
they do.

  1. Encourage them to speak about their problems
  2. Create a bully-free accepting environment
  3. Spread and educate pupils AND peers about mental health awareness
  4. Take constant feedback, and check-ins
  5. Don’t ignore any plea, or pattern
  6. Keep a bird eye view on inter-class and intra-class relations
  7. Have frequent meetings and discussions with parents
